Julie Becker, Ph.D., MPH is President and Founder of the award-winning, non-profit, Women's Health and Environmental Network, (WHEN) which champions our health through environmental action. Also, She is CEO of Evaluation Consultants, a research consultant and is an adjunct professor at Temple University's Department of Public Health. Dr. Becker is an active researcher with interests in developing prevention programs in environmental health, including both the physical and social environments, with a number of peer-reviewed publications. She has worked with community groups and healthcare professionals to mitigate environmental exposures. Dr. Becker is leading WHEN’s efforts to reduce pharmaceutical waste through a pilot project involving long-term care facilities and a minority-based senior center in the Philadelphia region. She is spearheading the Philadelphia Partnership for Pharmaceutical Pollution Prevention (P5), collaboration among federal, state, and local governments, non-profits, and academics to use research for implementing better practices in pharmaceutical waste management. She is currently leading “Health Care Without Harm’s” efforts on reducing and mitigating pharmaceutical waste. Dr. Becker has a master degree in Science Policy (The George Washington University), a Ph.D. in Public Health (Temple University), and a MPH in environmental health (Temple University).


Leadership Development Opportunities

Let’s start with something simple: “Better together.” Frequently, we forget that when we work collaboratively, things get done, aka “better together.” Throughout this year, I have had the opportunity to learn more about how people think about environmental health. We come to this Institute from different regional, professional, academic and cultural backgrounds. Yet, its our commitment to doing a good job, providing assistance to others, and learning to help others that brings us together. Our differences in our viewpoints and skills help make our efforts stronger, to make things that are “better together.” Through the networking with our colleagues, mentors, and coaches, we have had the chance to gain different perspectives on our Leadership Projects and other skill building exercises, as well as contribute ideas to members of our cohort. Leadership is often not about who gets the grant or the glory, but about building the relationship and the collaboration. And that sometimes is the toughest part of the project, because we have a tendency to focus on our differences, not what brings us together. Working with the Murphy’s Law Team has taught me the importance of different perspectives and the strength of those perspectives help to create a more robust outcome. And in this collaborative process, we are “better together.”
