The Guide to Community Preventive Services
(Community Guide) deals with community or "population based interventions."
The Community Guide, led by the independent
Task Force on Community Preventive
Services, addresses a variety of health topics important to communities, public
health agencies and health care systems. It summarizes what is known about the
effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of population-based interventions designed
to promote health, prevent disease, injury, disability and premature death as
well as exposure to environmental hazards.
The
*Good Health for All: Eliminating
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health booklet,
a collaborative effort by the Office of Minority Health and numerous partner
organizations, is a comprehensive resource that contains listings of notable
community-based programs, a wide variety of statistical data, and detailed
contact information for helpful tools for community-based work.
The
Community Tool Box
is a web site created and maintained by
the University of Kansas Work Group on Health Promotion and
Community Development in Lawrence, KS, and AHEC/Community
Partners in Amherst, Massachusetts. Its mission is to promote
community health and development by connecting people, ideas and
resources. There are sections on leadership, strategic planning,
community assessment, advocacy, grant writing, and evaluation to
give just a few examples. Each section includes a description
of the task, advantages of doing it, step-by-step guidelines,
examples, checklists of points to review, and training materials.
Environmental Health Resources lists a variety of environmental
health resources including federal agencies, curriculum guides,
books/journals, videotapes/multimedia programs, newsletters and listservs.
The list also contains resources by topic, such as, children's health,
specific chemical and pollution sources, and environmental justice and culture.
