This session examined the government's authority to protect and promote the public's health as discussed in the U.S. Supreme Court's 1905 seminal decision, Jacobson v. Massachusetts, through an exploration of the scope and limits of the state's public health powers, including vaccination.  The principal speakers presented different perspectives on Jacobson, reflecting on the tension between government powers and individual rights in relation to the formulation of sound public health law and policy.  Following the principal speakers, panel members offered brief comments on these and other relevant issues underlying the centennial assessment of the case.
