Disclosure of Faculty Relationship with Commercial Companies or
Organizations
ASLME endorses the standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME) and the guidelines of the American Medical
Association. To insure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor
in this educations program, all speakers are expected to disclose to the
audience any real or apparent conflict(s) of interest that may have a direct
bearing on the subject matter of the conference.
The intent of the policy is not to prevent a speaker with a potential
conflict of interest from making a presentation. It is merely intended that any
potential conflict should be identified openly so that the listeners may form
their own judgments about the presentation with the full disclosure of the
facts. It remains for the audience to determine whether the speaker's outside
interests may reflect a possible bias in either the exposition or the
conclusions presented.
Faculty presentations in CME activities must also:
- Give a balanced view of the therapeutic
options, by themselves or in conjunction with other presentations
- Identify unlabeled or investigational uses of a
commercial product
- Use generic names of products to contribute to impartiality. If trade names
are referenced, those of several companies should be used.
