Background

Law is an indispensable tool for the prevention and control of disease, injury, and disability, and has been critical to the achievement of successes in many domains of chronic disease control.

In partnership with the Public Health Law Program (PHLP) and the CDC Office of the General Counsel, on May 11-12, 2009, NCCDPHP will offer a “Public Health Law 101" (PHL-101) course designed specifically for NCCDPHP professional staff in Columbia Building, Room 1064 & 1065 on the Koger Campus.

During the past several years, NCCDPHP has worked closely with PHLP on several initiatives aimed at strengthening the Center's core capacities to use law as a tool in support of science-based disease control and prevention.

The most recent of these major initiatives was the 2008 National Summit on Legal Preparedness for Obesity Prevention and Control held here at CDC last June, and the public health grand rounds on “Cutting Edge Legal Preparedness for Chronic Disease Prevention” originally broadcast on November 29, 2007 http://www.publichealthgrandrounds.unc.edu/legal/index.htm.
