Use of the Hepatitis A VIS

After screening a person and determining that hepatitis A vaccination is appropriate, you need to educate the person about

•   the vaccine.
•   its risks and benefits.
•   what to do if the vaccinee experiences
a vaccine-related adverse event.

You are required by law to give the person (or legal representative) a hepatitis A Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) before administering the vaccine. Provide the person with an opportunity to read the VIS and ask questions. Then document in the person's health record that you provided the VIS and the publication date of the VIS.

NOTE: There is no federal requirement for signed consent prior to vaccination. Consult your agency and state immunization program to find out if either has a requirement for signed consent.
