Abstract
In response to a request from the Springdale Health Department an investigation was begun into a complaint by an adjacent business of an odor from Tina and Angela's Nail Salon (SIC-7231), Springdale, Ohio. One or two manicurists work at the site at any given time, and approximately five to 12 sets of nails may be completed on a typical day. Personal and area air sampling was conducted at the salon. Ethyl-methacrylate (97632) and acetone (67641) vapors were detected at low concentrations. Methyl-methacrylate and benzene vapors were not detected. There was no provision for the mechanical introduction of outside air to the salon. The author concludes that the concentrations of vapors on the day of the survey did not constitute a health hazard to the workers and customers at the salon, or to adjacent businesses. However, the author recommends measures to prevent migration of vapors from the salon to adjacent businesses, including installation of an exhaust ventilation system and the provision of outside air by a mechanical ventilation system.
