Abstract
Commercially available, portable, direct reading hydrogen-sulfide (7783064) monitors are evaluated as to design and performance, and a recommended set of design and performance standards meeting the needs of both government and industry are given. Design considerations included major features such as portability and data recording capability, principle of operation, ease and simplicity of operation, recalibration and zeroing, adequacy of engineering design, costs and parts availability, life of detector cell or reagent, instruction manual and safety certification. Performance considerations included response time, linearity/accuracy/precision, zero and span drifts, stability of the calibration setting, useful range of the meter, temperature effects, humidity effects, interference effects, reliability, warm-up time, accuracy of the manufacturer's calibration, noise, and recommended use technique. The H.NU Model PI 101 Photoionization Analyzer was ranked a qualified first due to its superior performance but lack of specificity; the Energetics Science Ecolyzer and the IBC Celesco Model X1134DR were ranked equally superior. The Bullard Types A and B and the Bacharach Sentox were all ranked as adequate providing that a remote probe is utilized in sampling atmospheres suspected of exceeding the TLV. The Mine Safety Appliances Toxgard, the Bacharach XD500 and General Monitors Model 2150 were not ranked due to unportability. (Contract No. 210-75-0037)
