Abstract
A safety information profile is presented for the fabricated metal products industry (SIC-3441). Subdivisions within this major heading are explained, and examples of the metal fabrication process are described. Potential safety and health hazards, and existing controls are discussed. Accident and illness information is summarized, and exposure levels to several chemical agents and to noise are presented. Industry growth trends and current safety standards are outlined, and a listing of names and addresses of industry associations and unions is provided. It is concluded that the injury rate is high in the industry, primarily due to problems with machinery, hand tools, working surfaces, and container handling. Further research to assess the adequacy of existing safety standards is recommended.
