AbstractApproximately 30 million workers in the United States are exposed to noise levels at work that are potentially hazardous to hearing. In certain work environments, such as construction and agriculture, engineering noise controls are difficult, if not impossible, to implement. These workers must instead rely on personal hearing protection to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. In many cases, however, worker safety depends on the ability to communicate with others. Given the choice between personal safety and hearing loss prevention, many workers choose not to wear hearing protectors that they perceived impair their ability to communicate. EARTALK is a combined hearing protector and communication device designed to be incorporated into a set of earmuff cups in such a way that their noise-reducing characteristics are not significantly diminished.
