Biography:
 

Gino D. Marinucci, MPH, is the Senior Director, Environmental Health for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO). He is responsible for the administration and direction of ASTHO’s Environmental Health Policy and Programs. Gino’s portfolio includes overseeing ASTHO’s engagement on issues that range from climate change and the natural environment, built environment and community design, food and water protection, and environmental public health infrastructure and capacity development. Gino has worked on a range of public and environmental health issues in Australia, the United Kingdom and in the USA. Prior to his arrival at ASTHO in December, 2006, Gino held the role of Senior Policy Advisor to the Western Australian Minister for the Environment. Gino served as an advisor to the Minister from October 2005 to December 2006. Gino’s experience also includes managing tobacco control programs in London for Cancer Research UK, and 10 years working with the Department of Health in Western Australia on issues that included environmental health, immunization and communicable diseases, and chronic disease prevention. Gino holds a Master of Public Health Degree from the University of Western Australia, a Post Graduate Diploma in Ecological Public Health Policy from Murdoch University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health from Curtin University. He is a native of Perth, Western Australia and now resides in Washington D.C. with his wife, Kelly.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Participating in the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute (EPHLI) has given me a great opportunity to develop important leadership skills, and the ability to undertake critical thinking. The active learning approach to understanding systems thinking taught me to understand the dynamics of a problem, and how to resolve it by breaking it down into its core components. The opportunity to apply systems thinking to real issues, while having access to support from mentors and experts enabled me to learn how to clearly identify weaknesses and where to target my efforts to obtain improved results. EPHLI focused on improving the leadership and managerial abilities of its fellows with the use of Skillscope and MBTI tools. These tools enabled me to develop an Individual Development plan, tailored to my personal needs and traits. Access to a specialist coach to help interpret the tools and develop a strategy for improvement, enhanced my ability to improve on aspects of my leadership style that I felt could use some work. The EPHLI experience was a good one, with exposure to quality speakers and useful reading materials, exercises and assignments. The face to face meetings were great learning experiences, and gave us an opportunity to learn and apply the leadership skills that we were learning in a fun and supportive environment. The mentors, staff and other fellows, provided great inspiration with their enthusiasm and dedication to EPH leadership. The networking opportunities provided great forums to meet with other professionals that were passionate about environmental health from all over the country. I am very thankful to my mentor, coach, team mates and the staff at EPHLI for providing the time to share their knowledge, skills and learning experiences with me. I am proud to have been a part of the EPHLI class of 2009, and look forward to encouraging others to apply for this great opportunity to improve their environmental public health leadership skills.
