The Immunization Encounter: Critical Issues
A National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Webcast

This program will address issues related to the routine immunization clinic encounter in the context of recommended standards of practice for patient intake and screening. Topics include patient and parent communication and education, vaccine storage and handling, preparing for medical emergencies, screening for contraindications and precautions to vaccination, vaccine administration, records and documentation, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. It will also highlight resources for staff orientation and development.
Goals
To improve immunization knowledge and practices in the United States.

Objectives

After this program, participants will be able to:

  • Locate resources relevant to current immunization practice.
  • List procedures for appropriate vaccine storage and handling and emergency preparedness.
  • Name a strategy for communicating about immunization risks and benefits.
  • List critical issues involved in patient screening and vaccine administration.
  • Describe recommendations for post-vaccination care and record keeping.
  • (For Pharmacists) Select and implement strategies to prevent or detect disease in the target population.
Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, DoD paraprofessionals, pharmacists, health educators & their colleagues who either administer vaccines or set policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs. Both private & public healthcare providers, including pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, medical assistants, and medical and nursing students.

Continuing Medical Education
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

Continuing Nursing Education
This activity for 2 contact hours is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. CDC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Continuing Education Contact Hours in Health Education
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. This program is a designated event for the CHES to receive 2 Category I contact hours in health education, CDC provider number GA0082.

Continuing Education Units (CEU)
The CDC has been reviewed and approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 8405 Greensboro Drive, Suite 800, McLean, VA 22102. The CDC has awarded 0.2 CEUs to participants who successfully complete this program.

Continuing Pharmacy Education
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
